Plot details
I never really understood this film.

What is believed to be an alien of some kind in the shape of a massive energy cloud. It was detected in Klingon space and is believed to be heading for Earth.

This cloud manages to destroys three Klingon starships and Epsilon 9, a Starfleet monitoring station.

The USS Enterprise is sent to intercept the cloud, which was currently under going a refit.

They manage to get inside the cloud to discover a massive ship, they discover its name which is V'ger.

Eventually they find that V'ger was nothing more than an unmanned scientific probe Voyager 6, that was found by an advanced alien, these aliens upgrade the probe and send it back to Earth to finish its mission, but it collects so much data it becomes self aware but without purpose.

The outcome, the Earth is saved and the probe completes its task
