Star Trek Insignia
There has been many Insignia designs over the years, but they have all held a common theme and that is the delta design. Some started off as just simple badges, but then moved onto being what is now known as a Combadge a communication device.
Mid 23rd Century. This delta design was unique to the crew of the Enterprise. All other ships had their own designs. Starfleet at this time had no overall symbol. The star in the middle was to represent command. Also during this period, science, Medical and engineering all have their own symbols.
Late 23rd Century. This delta design was unique to the crew of the Enterprise, bit it moved from just being the delta sign to one with a cirlce in the background and mainly gold in colour. All other ships had their own designs. Starfleet at this time had no overall symbol. The star in the middle was to represent command. Also during this period, science, Medical and engineering all have their own symbols.
Mid 24th Century. Around 2350 the Delta shape was now representative of all Starfleets badges. It has now been combined with a communicator to create the ComBadge. It is also worn on the left breast.
Late 24th Century. In 2371 Starfleet ordered a change to it's emblem, the oval was replaced with the round-edged rectangular bar. It still acts as a communicator.
